Dr. Viola I. Birss is a professor in Chemistry in University of Calgary and a world-leading scientist in electrochemistry. She has been a Tier 1 Canadian Research Chair in Fuel Cells and Related Clean Energy Systems since 2004 and Director of CAESR-Tech (Calgary Advanced Energy Storage and Conversion Research Technologies). She has made significant contributions in the areas of fuel cells, electrolysis cells and novel electrocatalysis and support materials. Beside excellence in science, Viola is also a strong female leader and mentor that has led multiple students in the realm of electrochemistry.
Ms. Annie Hoang is a M.Sc student in physical chemistry, at the University of Calgary. Annie is a committed researcher, active volunteer and an impressive student leader. Annie’s research goal is creating better energy solutions by creating novel nanoparticles for fuel cells. Besides scientific studies, she also spends time volunteering, mentoring and promoting women in science. She was awarded WRC Distinguished Graduate Student Award 2019 and is the first awarded CREATE female trainees of CREATE ME2 for the year of 2019.
